Dutton Park cemetery, formerly known as the South Brisbane cemetery is a local icon, its great iron fence is passed by thousands of drivers every day without knowing who lies there. The cemetery officially opened in December 1870, one hundred and thirty-nine years ago. The oldest recorded grave here dates to 1 August 1870. Dutton Park Cemetery is one of the earliest cemeteries in Queensland.
It has grown to become the second largest cemetery in Queensland . Although the exact number within in its grounds is uncertain as early records were lost in the floods - somewhere between 90,000 - 100,000 souls lie at rest here... forty-two do not.
Covering forty-six acres, the burial ground stretches over this hill, down to the St Lucia stretch of the Brisbane River . During the day you can see it. Spread out over a wide area, hidden among the creepy old trees, are thousands of gravestones and memorials. There are more graves than memorials - the result of flood, vandalism and time.
Gravediggers reckon that this is the creepiest cemetery in Brisbane. They should know. You'll find out. This evening you will hear real ghost stories gathered from former gravediggers, sextons, council staff, local residents and visit real haunted memorials.
