Haunted Site - Toowong Cemetery

Spreading over hills and valleys, claiming some 240 acres
at the base of Mount Coot-tha is one of the most beautiful
haunted places in Brisbane - eerie Toowong Cemetery, resting
place of 117, 000 citizens, some famous, others infamous -
including the memorial to GOVERNOR BLACKALL, the crypt of
the murderous Mayne family, anti-war protestor Richard Ramo
and the grave of legendary boxer, Peter Jackson.
Opened officially in 1875 it grew to encompass hundreds of
acres, becoming the state's largest cemetery. A Victorian
necropolis, it reflects the attitudes, passions and beliefs
of those who lived in the late 19th - early 20th century'
s. Much of the cemetery is overgrown with ferns and vines.
Ancient hoop pines rise up towards the sky from dark groves.
Broken gravestones and leaning memorials dot the landscape.
Many plots have collapsed and others are in imminent danger
of subsiding.
There are many parts where you would not care to go alone.
Locals have long been drawn to explore it. Now locked to the
public at night to prevent vandalism it is even more isolated
and empty than before.
Empty, save the dead...
