The Government Printery is one of the oldest remaining buildings along George Street dating back to 1874. The facade in front of us was built in 1910 and there are two particularly interesting creatures perched on top of it. They look like gargoyles... but they are not.
There is a belief that carved gargoyles on a building will keep evil away. That is true in most buildings except here in the Government Printery. These two charming demon figures on top of the parapet are actually called the "Printing Devils". They are not there to ward away evil but rather as a mark of respect to the most evil denizen of them all - The Devil who it was said was the boss of the printing trade. |
