Old Government Printery

The Government Printery is one of the oldest remaining buildings along George Street dating back to 1874. The facade in front of us was built in 1910 and there are two particularly interesting creatures perched on top of it. They look like gargoyles... but they are not.

There is a belief that carved gargoyles on a building will keep evil away. That is true in most buildings except here in the Government Printery. These two charming demon figures on top of the parapet are actually called the "Printing Devils". They are not there to ward away evil but rather as a mark of respect to the most evil denizen of them all - The Devil who it was said was the boss of the printing trade.

GHOSTS OF BOGGO ROAD: Ghosts and Gallows is written and extensively researched by dark historian Jack Sim of Ghost Tours infamy, who reveals the creepy tales from behind the ominous red brick walls of one of Australia's most notorious prisons. From ghostly warders who are still on duty and inmates who are still 'inside' to ghostly wails heard during executions on the infamous gallows. Be chilled as you enter Boggo Road Gaol.
